WhatsApp DP size guide

Updated 2026-09-03 · The crop is drawn on a canvas in this tab. No copy of your photo is sent anywhere.

WhatsApp DP size in one line: upload a square of at least 500 × 500 pixels and keep the important part inside a circle. WhatsApp stores your display picture as a square and every screen — chat list, contact info, group members — shows it cropped to a circle. That single fact explains almost every “my DP got cut” complaint.

The numbers

SpecValueWhy
Aspect ratio1:1 (square)WhatsApp forces a square crop when you set the photo.
Recommended size500 × 500 pxSharp on every phone; WhatsApp downsizes larger uploads anyway.
Minimum useful size192 × 192 pxBelow this the DP looks soft in contact info.
Visible areacircle inscribed in the squareThe four corners (about 21% of the square) are never shown.
FormatJPG or PNGWhatsApp re-compresses to JPG; transparency is discarded.

There is no official pixel size published by WhatsApp; 500 × 500 is the size that survives WhatsApp's compression without looking blurry, and it is what the WhatsApp DP preset exports by default. Larger squares (up to 1000 × 1000) are fine too.

How to crop a WhatsApp DP without cutting the face

  1. 1
    Open the WhatsApp DP preset

Go to cropphoto.com/?preset=whatsapp-dp. The cropper locks a 1:1 square, sets the output to 500×500 and draws the circle WhatsApp will show.

  2. 2
    Add the photo

Drop it in or tap Choose photo. It stays on your phone or computer — nothing is uploaded.

  3. 3
Fit the subject inside the circle

Drag the square so the face sits inside the dashed circle. Anything in the corners outside the circle will not be visible.

  4. 4
Download and set it in WhatsApp

Tap Download, then in WhatsApp go to Settings → Profile → photo → Gallery and pick the file. WhatsApp's own crop will already fit.

“My full photo doesn't fit” — add padding instead of cropping

A tall portrait or a wide group photo cannot become a square without losing something. If you would rather keep everything, make the photo square by adding space: open More options → Expand canvas, add padding to the short sides and pick a fill colour (white, black, or a colour sampled from the photo). The result is a square with your whole picture inside it, and WhatsApp's circle will crop the padding rather than the people. The Expand canvas link opens that panel directly.

Why does WhatsApp make my DP blurry?

WhatsApp re-compresses every profile photo to save bandwidth. Two things make that worse: a small source (under about 300 × 300 px) and a picture that is already heavily compressed. Start from the original camera photo rather than a screenshot or a forwarded image, crop to 500 × 500 or larger, and save as JPG at quality 90 or higher (the default in CropPhoto). PNG is fine too, but WhatsApp will convert it to JPG anyway.

Group DP, business profile and status

  • Group icon: same rules — square upload, shown as a circle. The WhatsApp DP preset works for groups.
  • WhatsApp Business profile photo: also square-to-circle; use a logo with margin around it so the circle does not clip the edges.
  • Status photos: not a DP — status shows the full picture, ideally a 9:16 portrait like an Instagram Story. Use the Story / Reel preset (1080 × 1920).

Quick checklist

  • Square, 500 × 500 px or larger.
  • Face or logo inside the circle; corners are disposable.
  • JPG from the original photo, not a screenshot.
  • Can't fit it? Expand the canvas instead of cropping.
