Drop several at once, or a whole folder, and they stack up in name order — each one is cropped in turn, and the sheet count below the frame tells you where you are.

*opens wherever your browser can decode it, and saves as JPG, PNG or WebP. An iPhone HEIC photo opens in Safari; other browsers say so and explain how to get a JPG. An animated GIF or WebP gives its first frame. Up to 80 megapixels and 150 MB per photo.

The WhatsApp DP square is set and the circle is drawn on it. Keep the face inside the circle, check the previews, then Download.

Crop a WhatsApp DP from any photo, image or picture with the circle drawn on the square while you frame it. Out comes a 500×500 JPEG square, the shape WhatsApp asks for, with the face inside the part it will show.

WhatsApp shows a square profile photo as a circle and publishes no pixel size for it, so this page writes a square it displays sharply and shows you the circle before you save, at three sizes, beside a rounded-square and a squircle preview.

Other avatars: the PFP cropper previews several masks for any app, and circle crop writes a round transparent PNG. Whole photo with a border: no crop. Instagram sizes: crop for Instagram.

What you can do here

  • The circle, live

The dashed circle on the square is what a round avatar keeps; drag the box until the face sits inside it.

  • Previews at app sizes

Under the stage, the crop is shown as a circle at 180, 96 and 40 px, and as a rounded square and a squircle.

  • A safe square out

WhatsApp publishes no DP pixel size, so the page writes a 500×500 JPEG, a square it shows well. You can change the size under Export.

  • Nothing cut off instead

To put the whole photo in the square with a border rather than crop it, use the no-crop page.

Questions about cropping

What size should a WhatsApp DP be?

WhatsApp does not publish a pixel size for profile photos. It takes a square and shows it as a circle. This page writes a 500×500 JPEG, which is a size it displays sharply; any larger square also works, and you can set one under Export.

Why does WhatsApp cut off my photo?

It crops a non-square photo to a square and then shows that square as a circle, so the corners and often the top of the head disappear. Cropping the square yourself, with the circle drawn, decides what stays.

Do the previews show exactly what WhatsApp shows?

They show the shape and the sizes avatars appear at, not WhatsApp's own rendering. The file is always the square; the previews only show what each mask cuts off.

Can I put the whole photo in without cropping?

Yes. The no-crop page fits the whole photo inside the square with a colour or blurred border, so nothing is cut off. Choose WhatsApp DP square under Fit without cropping.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The crop is drawn on a canvas in this tab and the file is saved by your browser. Nothing about the photo is sent anywhere.

Can I make it a round PNG instead?

Yes, on the circle crop page: it writes a transparent PNG with the circle cut out. WhatsApp itself expects a square and will crop a round PNG again, so the square is the better upload.
