Drop several at once, or a whole folder, and they stack up in name order — each one is cropped in turn, and the sheet count below the frame tells you where you are.

*opens wherever your browser can decode it, and saves as JPG, PNG or WebP. An iPhone HEIC photo opens in Safari; other browsers say so and explain how to get a JPG. An animated GIF or WebP gives its first frame. Up to 80 megapixels and 150 MB per photo.

A square is set and three masks are previewed under the photo. Frame the face so it survives all of them, then Download.

Crop a profile picture from any photo, image or picture and see it under the masks apps cut avatars into. Out comes a 400×400 JPEG square with the face placed where a circle, a rounded square and a squircle all keep it.

Under the photo, the crop is previewed as a circle at 180, 96 and 40 pixels and as a rounded square and a squircle, updating as you drag. The file stays the square, because that is what apps ask for; the previews only show what each one will cut off.

For WhatsApp in particular, see crop WhatsApp DP. A round file: circle crop or the shape cropper. One avatar per person from a group photo: the face cropper.

What you can do here

  • Three masks, real sizes

The crop is previewed as a circle at 180, 96 and 40 px, and as a rounded square and a squircle, the shapes apps cut avatars into.

  • One file that survives them all

The file is a 400×400 square. If the face survives the smallest circle and the squircle, it survives the app.

  • Faces are never sliced

Run Smart crop (one disclosed download) and the verdict says whether every face in the box is whole.

  • Round files too

Need the circle in the file? The shape cropper and circle crop write transparent PNGs; the squircle is one tap away.

How to pfp cropper

  1. 1
    Open the photo

Drop it on the box. It stays in this tab.

  2. 2
    Frame for the smallest mask

Drag the square until the face sits inside the 40 px circle preview without being cramped in the 180 px one.

  3. 3
    Download the square

The contract shows 400×400 and the KB. Upload the square; each app applies its own mask.

Questions about cropping

What size should a profile picture be?

Apps differ and most do not publish a number, so this page writes a 400×400 square, which is sharp at every avatar size shown. Set a larger square under Export if an app asks for one.

Why preview three shapes?

Apps cut avatars into different shapes: many use a circle, some a rounded square, and app icons and some profiles a squircle. A crop that keeps the face whole in all three is safe wherever it goes.

Are the previews exactly what the app will show?

They show the shape and typical display sizes, not any app's own rendering. The file is always the square; the previews only show what each mask cuts off.

Can I make a matching pfp pair?

Crop the two photos one after the other in the same session: the square and its settings carry over to the second photo in the queue, so both come out the same size.

Can I save the circle itself?

Yes: circle crop writes a transparent PNG with the circle cut out, and the shape cropper does the same for a squircle, heart, star or hexagon. Most apps still want the square upload.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The previews and the file are drawn in this tab. Nothing about the photo is sent anywhere.
