Crop a photo, image or picture to the 2×2 inch US size and measure the head before you upload it. Out comes a 600×600 square JPEG (up to 1200×1200), with the head height and eye line checked against the published bands.
The bands come from the US Department of State's photo composition template, read on 18 October 2026: head 50–69% of the image height and eyes 56–69% up from the bottom. The face finder runs on this device, after one disclosed download, and the verdict states what it measured and what it estimated.
Other sizes: passport photo crop for India 35×45 mm and eleven more, exam form photos with KB ranges, and the spec table with every source. A family at once goes through bulk crop; one face per file from a group photo through the face cropper.
What you can do here
The published window
A square from 600×600 to 1200×1200 pixels, as the US Department of State's composition template states it, checked 18 Oct 2026.
Head and eyes measured
After the face finder runs, the verdict line gives the head height and the eye line as shares of the frame, against 50–69% and 56–69%.
Eye band on the photo
The 56–69% eye band is shaded on the crop box, so you can line the eyes up before anything is measured.
Print or digital
Choose US passport, print (2×2 in) and 300 ppi is written into the file, so 600 px states its 2 inches.
How to 2x2 photo crop
- 1Open a straight-on photo
Taken against a plain light wall, face square to the camera. It stays in this tab.
- 2Frame the face in the band
Drag the square so the eyes sit inside the shaded band and the chin and crown fit. Under Smart crop, press Suggest a crop (one download) to measure the head and eyes.
- 3Read the verdict, then download
The verdict line says whether the head and eye shares are inside the bands; the clause list checks size, background corners and bytes. Download saves that file.

Questions about cropping
What size is a 2x2 photo in pixels?
For the US digital upload, a square between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels. This page writes 600×600; set a larger square under Export when the crop holds that many pixels. Printed, 2 inches at 300 ppi is 600 pixels, and the print row writes that density into the file.
Is the head size really measured?
When the face finder has run, yes: the head is measured from the chin to an estimated crown (the crown is estimated above the face box, and the verdict says so) and given as a share of the frame against the published 50–69%. Without the face finder the page draws the guides and says the head was not measured.
What does the eye line have to be?
The eyes between 56% and 69% of the image height, measured from the bottom, as the composition template states. The band is shaded on the crop box, and the measured eye line comes from the face finder's two eye points.
Does this make the background white?
No. CropPhoto frames and sizes the photo; it does not change pixels. It measures the two top corners of the output and says whether they are plain and light. If they are not, the fix is a new photo against a plain light wall.
Is this the same as a passport photo for India?
No. The Indian passport-size photo is 35×45 mm, 413×531 pixels at 300 ppi, and it is on the passport photo crop page. A 2x2 is the square US size.
Does it guarantee the photo is accepted?
No tool can. It measures the file against the published numbers on the date shown and says which clauses pass. The authority decides; check its instructions before you submit.
